Description and Application of a Weep Hole and Weep Hole Cover:

Weep holes are small gaps between the bricks in external walls. Weep Hole Covers are
plastic rectangular discs which are bonded over the weep hole, with the ridge sloping
downward and outward from the masonry, they can also be painted.
Dual purpose of weep holes:
Ventilation of the internal wall cavity which prevents potential mildew, dry rot and damp.
Drainage of water that enters the cavity due to capillary action, condensation, or accidental
flooding. In South Africa we have a climate that does result in heavy rains and flooding during
season,it is not unusual to see water flowing from the weep holes on the prevailing side of the well-constructed houses after heavy rains and flooding.

Challenges with Weep Holes:
Weep holes also provide access for rodents, bees, wasps, snakes, cockroaches and other
pests who find refuge in the cavities.
